Some of the most valued members of our family have four legs instead of two. Our pets are our best friends and most loyal companions. Our homes are their home, so we want our space to be a safe and functional space for them.
We’ve broken this guide down into three areas every pet owner should consider when making your house a home for your furry friend.
House plants have been a huge trend in home decorating for a while now. They can be functional by purifying the air, or providing herbs while also being beautiful to look at. But not all plants are pet friendly. When thinking about plants to bring in your home do your research. Make sure the plants you put in and around your home are safe for animals.
Also, when looking at buying a new home take a look at the back yard and any other outside space your pet may be in. Look closely at the plants in those areas. There may be some you need to pull up and get rid of before moving your pet in.
Safe plants for pets: Spider plant, Gerbera Daisy, Bamboo Palm, Boston Fern
Not Safe for pets: Aloe Vera, English Ivy, Peace Lily, Jade plant
Block off unsafe spaces
When thinking about how to make a home safe for your pet you want to think through what rooms are not pet-friendly. For example, if you have a dog who likes to dig in the trash keeping them out of the kitchen would be necessary for their safety. Putting up a doggie gate could be a perfect solution for keeping them out of rooms that are not pet friendly.
This option from Amazon allows you to mount the gate to the wall and has an easy to open door. And a smaller pet door at the bottom.
Here’s another great gate! It creates a barrier. that can be easily moved to get around but doesn’t have to be mounted to a wall.
Make your pet feel at home
Once you have determined where your pet should not be, focus on making the areas they can be in comfortable and functional for them. This can be as simple as purchasing a pet bed, or more complex like renovating your mudroom to include a pet shower.
